INTRODUCTION TO COID – COMPENSATION FOR OCCUPATIONAL INJURIES AND DISEASES E-LEARNING TRAINING COURSE

This course provides the candidate with an overview of the current and relevant legislation pertaining to compensation for Occupational Injuries and Disease. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Occupational Injuries and Disease Act
  • Occupational Health and Safety Act

AIM OF THE COID – COMPENSATION FOR OCCUPATIONAL INJURIES AND DISEASES E-LEARNING TRAINING COURSE

This course outlines and describes the implications involved with non-adherence to legislative requirements for the compensation of occupational injuries and diseases for both the employer and employee.
This may include fair industrial relations practices, non-acceptable compensation claims, and/or any penalties to the employer.
Requirements pertaining to both entitled and non-entitled individuals are explained along with the circumstances under which compensation may be claimed. Candidates are thoroughly equipped with extensive knowledge of compensation benefits involved as per legislative requirements which may include, but not be limited, to:

  • Earnings
  • Earnings for assessments
  • Temporary and permanent disability
  • Compensation for death or injury
  • Control of payment of pension
  • Medical treatment, and
  • Traveling expenses

An imperative aspect of this course includes:

  • Compensation procedures
  • Understanding of the required claim process for occupational injuries and diseases, and
  • The importance of the investigation process which is explained in terms of its impact and the reward of compensations.

The course not only explains the documentation requirements but also the submission of such documents in addition to the record keeping system which must be in place to keep such record for a minimum of forty years.

COURSE OUTCOME

Upon completion of this course, the attending candidate will be able to:

  • Have gained sufficient knowledge of the theory and principles associated with initial incident reporting
  • Assess the nature of the incident along with identification and problem solving pertaining to the completion, submission, and finalisation of compensation claims.
  • Collect, analyse, organise, and critically evaluate both data and information so that compensation claims can be processed and submitted in the prescribed period.
  • Timeous submission of required documentation, records, and evidence of injury, disease, or illness which occurred in the workplace.
  • Design and initialise an appropriate response or feedback in addition to evaluating the necessity for the formulation, development, and implementation of an incident management plan.
  • Know how to conduct interviews with key role players including, but not limited to, witnesses, complainants, and any other affected persons, and
  • Keep all information as confidential and private as possible

The content of this course is formulated around the:

  • Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Disease Act, 130 of 1993
  • The Occupational Health and Safety Act, 85 of 1993, and
  • The General Administrative Regulations

This content includes, but is not limited to:

  • The provision of an overview of current, relevant legislation pertaining to compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases along with the requirements of reporting such
  • Description of the compensation procedure for Occupational Injuries and Diseases with the responsibilities of both the employer and employee in reporting incidents and accidents
  • The complete Compensation Commissioner reporting documentation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases along with the requirements to complete, in accordance, with legislative requirements
  • The definition of both persons entitled and non-entitled along with the circumstances under which compensation may be claimed in terms of legislation, and
  • Reporting processes along with the importance of investigating processes of injuries and/or other Occupational Diseases which are explained in accordance with legislative requirements.

ASSESSMENT

The candidate attending the course will be assessed against the outcomes of each element through the completion of a subscribed knowledge assessment along with a practical assessment. These assessments will cover the essential embedded knowledge as stipulated in the course and will ensure that the candidate can apply the learning to a working situation.

CONDITIONS OF ENROLMENT AND CERTIFICATION

To gain access to this training program, it is mandatory that the employer subscribe to the SafetyWallet membership subscription so that the learner can enrol to any of the Health and Safety e-Learning training programmes.
Attending candidates must obtain a pass mark of at least 75% or higher is necessary in each Modular Assessment. Should these conditions have been met, the candidate will receive an accredited Certificate of Completion.
