Short Introduction
Introduction to Smoking in the Workplace e-Learning Training Course This course aims to highlight the contents and amendments to the Tobacco Products Control Act. Given the high risk to the health of both smokers and non-smokers caused by the use of tobacco, the Department of Health sought to implement harsher rules and consequences involved with the use of tobacco products.
This course outlines the duties of the employer along with responsibilities pertaining to the provision of a safe and healthy smoke-free workplace.
The aim of the course is to emphasise that employers have a legal and moral responsibility to protect the environment of workers against the harmful effects of tobacco smoke.
The training also extensively explains the responsibility that employers have to ensure that no person smokes in a non-smoking area. Failure to comply will result in a fine of an amount up to R50,000.00.
Employers are obligated to ensure that workers who do not wish to be exposed to tobacco smoke are safeguarded against it. Employers must also ensure that any person under the age of 18 years is prohibited in any place where smoking is permitted.
This includes ensuring that persons under the age of 18 are prohibited to engage in the sale or distribution of any tobacco products on the business premises.
Aim of the course
This course allows provides the candidate with the necessary knowledge to explain the responsibilities and obligations of employers in displaying signs to inform worker and the public of non-smoking areas and those designated for smoking. In the course, the candidate will also learn that employers of any health establishment that provide health services are prohibited from the sale of tobacco products in that establishment. The candidate will be able to identify the rules that employers must include regarding smoking in the workplace in the company policy and procedures. These should be available to every employee. The candidate will also be familiarised with the outline of a policy on smoking and what the policy should contain. The candidate will also be familiarised with the requirements of the sale of tobacco products in the workplace.
Course Outcome
Upon completion of this course, the candidate will be capable of, and able to understand and demonstrate the content through the application of knowledge in both familiar and unfamiliar circumstances in addition to being able to:
- Demonstrate basic knowledge of, and outline, the scope and nature of Occupational Health and Safety, and know how this is affected by smoking in the workplace, or the consequences of not having a detailed or robust No Smoking policy.
- Explain the warning methods and physical barriers, moral, and financial reasons for promoting No Smoking in the workplace.
- Understand the process involved with creating a legal framework for the regulation of the Tobacco Products Control legislation.
- Explain the scope, duties, and offences pertaining to employers, managers, employees, and others, under the Tobacco Products Control legislation.
Key Content Covered
This course is aimed at ensuring that smoking in the workplace is managed and controlled in terms of the Tobacco Products Control Act. Content covered in this course includes:
- The identification of Safety, Health and Environmental Hazards
- The solving of problems and making decisions based on critical thinking when implementing or creating a smoke-free working environment.
- Evaluation of potential hazards and the implementation of required processes to promote No Smoking in the workplace.
- Provision of an extensive understanding of the current Tobacco legislation and regulations.
- Preparation involved with making the workplace safe and formulation of critical health and safety information promoting No Smoking in the workplace.
- Interpretation of the context of the Tobacco legislation and identifying common impacts created by smoking such as productivity, equality, and risks of not adhering to the smoking rules of the company.
Assessment
The candidate attending the course will be assessed against the outcomes of each element through the completion of a subscribed knowledge assessment along with a practical assessment. These assessments will cover the essential embedded knowledge as stipulated in the course and will ensure that the candidate can apply the learning to a working situation.

Attending candidates are required to achieve a minimum pass mark of 75% in each Modular Assessment.
